Important Industry Update: Shorter SSL Certificate Lifecycles

Dear customers,

We want to inform you about important changes regarding the issuance of SSL and Code Signing certificates, which are taking effect as part of new global security standards. The goal of these changes is to enhance overall internet security and ensure data accuracy.

What is changing and when?

The maximum validity period for new SSL certificates is being gradually reduced. DigiCert and Sectigo have already limited issuance to a maximum of 199 and 200 days, respectively. In the table below, you can see the long-term industry roadmap for further reductions:

Maximum Validity Period Minimum # of renewals per year Industry Deadline
200 days ~2 March 15, 2026
100 days ~4 March 15, 2027
47 days ~8 March 15, 2029

How does this affect you?

  • Existing certificates: Your current active certificates remain trusted and valid until their original expiration date. No immediate action is required.
  • Multi-year plans: You can still purchase multi-year SSL plans (for 1, 3, or 5 years), but the certificate itself will need to be re-issued (renewed for free) before the current maximum term expires during your purchased plan.
  • Automation: Given that certificates will need to be renewed multiple times a year, we highly recommend utilizing automated solutions to keep your websites secure without manual intervention.

If you have any questions, need help with automation, or want advice regarding your SSL certificates, the SkyHosting team is here to help!
